So, I’ve known for a while somewhere deep down that there were changes in the wind here at Crystal Clarity. Up until a few weeks ago, though, I haven’t been sure what form those changes would take.
So what happened a few weeks ago? Honestly, I’m not 100% sure…
It might be a little bit of each of those things put together.
Whatever it was that triggered it, though, I started noticing that something had shifted in my focus – and in my feelings towards that focus.
And I’m excited (and a little bit nervous) to share some of what I’ve become clear on.
Well, at least for the next few months anyway. You could see it as a bit of an experiment: if it works, I’ll keep doing it. If not? Well, I’m not entirely sure, but I know something needs to change in my current business model.
Now, don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying I don’t want to do any more copywriting packages again ever. I just… think I can offer more value to more difference-makers through consults, group programmes and training resources.
Why? Well, while I love copywriting, it’s hugely time-intensive for me. Many clients are shocked to discover that a single 500-word web page can take me anything from 5-10 hours by the time I factor in all the pre-writing communication, strategy session, research, writing editing and followup.
Add in all the “empty space / doing nothing” time that my brain needs for the seeds of ideas to germinate and bloom… and yep: my process definitely isn’t quick!
When I do a consult to help someone plan or review their copy though? I feel like I give them almost as much value (perhaps even more, since I’m helping them learn to do it themselves for the future) in a much shorter time. And because it takes me less time, I can offer that value at a much lower price. So it’s a win for me AND for them.
For the past month, I’ve been quietly looking for part-time technical writing and editing gigs with larger businesses that feel aligned to me. Tech writing and editing tend to be less time-intensive than copywriting is for me: I think it’s the logical, linear way that my brain works.
I’ve applied for a few contracts, and have a couple of possibles on the horizon now (including one in the academic sector I’m REALLY enthusiastic about – cross your fingers for me on that one!)
The idea with this is that lining up some regular part-time work will start bringing in more consistent income – something I’ve never had in my business.
And THEN, instead of spending so much of my “creative juice” on marketing packages for short, one-off projects for single, individual clients? I can spend my energy on creating awesome content and training resources that benefit a lot more people instead.
That’s my reasoning, anyway: we’ll see if it actually works out that way!
Well, in the short-term, if you’re like most of the Crystal Clarity tribe, probably not a lot. Unless you had definite plans to book in a copywriting package with me in Q2, you probably won’t notice much difference.
(If you did, you’ll find the project start times are quite a bit further out now though. Also, you’ll notice that I’ve raised my package rates to reflect the time they’re actually taking me!)
If you’ve been thinking of booking a consult, on the other hand, you’ll probably find that I have more time slots available than I did before. So that’s a bonus!
And in the long term? I’m hoping it means I finally have the time and creative energy to produce all the freebies, blog posts, webinars, short courses, and possibly group programmes that I keep planning and consistently failing to get anywhere near now.
In other words – if all goes according to plan – it means LOTS more goodies for you.
Again… that’s the aim: we’ll see how it all works out in practice 🙂
